Power shafts - the general information and condition checkTorque transfer from transmission to driving wheels of the car is made by means of power shafts. The internal ends of both shaft enter directly into the lateral gear wheels of differential equipped with reciprocal shlitsa.
External pins of shaft are also equipped with shlitsa, are passed in naves of driving wheels and are fixed in them by big stupichny nuts.
The internal ends of power shafts are equipped with hinges of equal angular speeds (CV JOINT) of the sliding type, providing freedom as inclination of assemblies under various corners, and their longitudinal shift in a certain range. The basic working element of internal CV JOINTS is the bearing assembly of double compensation consisting of ball-bearings, placed between an internal holder and an external separator. Hinges can be disassembled for cleaning of components and check of their condition. In case of detection of ineradicable defects the failed hinge is replaced assembled.
The external ends of power shafts are equipped with Rzeppa type CV JOINTS (it is said “шеппа”) or “Birfield” which are also consisting of ball-bearings, placed between an internal holder and an external separator, however a design of these hinges, unlike internal, provides only angular degree of freedom of components, at total absence of possibility of longitudinal moving. These hinges are not subject to dismantling and in case of violation of serviceability of functioning should be replaced.
The condition of protective covers of CV JOINTS should be checked on a regular basis. In case of identification of cuts or cracks the failed covers should be replaced, and hinges are newly filled by fresh greasing. Replacement of covers is made after preliminary dismantle of power shafts (see. Section Removal and installation of power shafts).
The most typical signs of wear/damage of CV JOINTS, besides greasing loss, is emergence of the gnash which is starting with a stupichny part of forward wheels during commission of turns (usually the gnash is published internal on turn radius by a wheel). The probability of emergence of similar sounds in a combination to sharply accruing vibration is not excluded also during car acceleration. For check of a condition of CV JOINTS it is necessary to grasp one hand a shaft, another - for the case of the hinge and, making attempts of rotation of components to the opposite sides, to estimate size taking place люфта. Existence a little appreciable люфта testifies to wear шлицов or internal components of bearing assembly. At the same time examine shaft on existence of cracks, deformations and other damages of the mechanical plan.
